Breakthru opens door to care industry with new community college

The National Disability Insurance Scheme will create demand for an extra 90,000 workers to join the disability workforce nationally, and there are some concerns that this demand will not be met. Breakthru, as a leading organisation in the sector are well positioned to deliver the training people are asking for.

Breakthru first opened its doors over 25 years ago, assisting people with a disability to find employment, access community services and learn new skills so they can live the life they imagine. For over half of this time, Breakthru’s RTO has delivered contemporary training in this industry.

With a strong foothold in communities across Australia, Breakthru now aim to go one step further and train the next generation of carers, with a plan to train 900 newly-qualified support workers over the next 3 years.

Breakthru College provides options for students to learn at a pace that suits them, with highly experienced trainers, online or in a Face to Face environment. The new e-learning platform gives students the opportunity to experience an engaging and contemporary learning solution, while also fitting in with their busy life.

Chief Executive Officer Paul Stiff said the industry is in dire need of more skilled workers to ensure people with a disability are supported for years to come.

“Breakthru hope that with the launch of our new Community College we will be able to make a real impact on the lives of people with disability by properly training future carers to support their needs”.

National Training Manager Sonya Johnson shared similar sentiments, voicing the need for more staff across the community services sector.

“90,000 new entry level staff is no small feat by any means. With the ongoing Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, and further commissions expected to come for the Disability & Mental Health sectors, entry-level qualifications are bound to increase for workers across Australia”, she said.

“Certificate III and IV qualifications in Disability, Aged Care and Mental Health will become highly sought after prerequisites to future employment, and we hope to support students in securing sustainable employment in our growing sector.”

Breakthru College have locations across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. To find out more about available courses or funding, call 1800 767 212 or email [email protected]
